The Night of Decree

saurah qadr (1)

Quran

Surah Qadr verses 1-5

In Surah Dukhan verses 3-5

Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind].

On that night is made distinct every precise matter –

[Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger].

Qadar means that Allah has decreed everything that happens in the universe according to His prior knowledge and the dictates of His wisdom.

Belief in al-Qadar includes four things:

1 – The belief that Allaah knows all things, in general and in detail, from eternity to eternity, whether that has to do with His actions or the actions of His slaves.

2 – The belief that Allaah has written that in al-Lawh al-Mahfooz (the Book of Decrees).

Concerning these two matters Allah says in Surah al-Hajj 22:70

“Know you not that Allaah knows all that is in the heaven and on the earth? Verily, it is (all) in the Book (Al‑Lawh Al‑Mahfooz). Verily, that is easy for Allaah”

Abdullah b. ‘Amr b. al-‘As reported:

I heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:
Allah ordained the measures (of quality) of the creation fifty thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth, as His Throne was upon water.
Sahih Muslim 2653 b

The first thing Allah created was the pen. He said to it: Write. It asked: What should I write, my Lord?
He said: Write what was decreed about everything till the Last Hour comes.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4700

In Surah al-Hadid verse 22

“No calamity befalls on the earth or in yourselves but it is inscribed in the Book of Decrees (Al Lawh Al Mahfooz) before We bring it into existence. Verily, that is easy for Allah”

The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried.

Al-Mubaarakpuri said:

“The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried” means,

What has been decreed has been written in al-Lawh al-Mahfooz (the Book of Decrees), and nothing else will be written after that is finished.

Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi, 7/186

The writing is of two types: one kind which cannot be altered or changed, which is what is in al-Lawh al-Mahfooz, and a type which may be altered or changed, which is in the hands of the angels. And the ultimate outcome is what is written in al-Lawh al-Mahfooz.

3 – The belief that whatever happens only happens by the will of Allaah – whether that has to do with His actions or the actions of created beings.

Allah says concerning His actions in Surah al-Qasas verse 68

“And your Lord creates whatsoever He wills and chooses”

____________________________________________

4 – The belief that all things that happen are created by Allaah in their essence, their attributes and their movements.

Allah says in Surah al-Zumar verse 62

“Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is the Wakeel (Trustee, Disposer of affairs, Guardian) over all things”

If a person believes in all these things then he believes correctly in the divine will and decree (al-qadar).

So the entire universe is the dominion of Allah, and nothing can happen in His dominion without His knowledge and will.

Virtues of the Night of Qadr
‘Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to seclude himself (in the mosque) during the last ten nights of Ramadan. He would say, “Search for Lailat-ul-Qadr (Night of Decree) in the last ten nights of Ramadan.”
Riyad as Saliheen Hadith 201

Doing Good deeds
Prayer at Night (Tahajjud)

Narrated Aisha:

With the start of the last ten days of Ramadan, the Prophet (ﷺ) used to tighten his waist belt (i.e. work hard) and used to pray all the night, and used to keep his family awake for the prayers.

Sahih al-Bukhari 2024

Narrated `Ali bin Abi Talib:

One night Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) came to me and Fatima, the daughter of the Prophet (ﷺ) and asked, “Won’t you pray (at night)?”

I said, “O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! Our souls are in the hands of Allah and if He wants us to get up He will make us get up.

When I said that, he left us without saying anything and I heard that he was hitting his thigh and saying, “But man is more quarrelsome than anything.” (18.54)

Sahih al-Bukhari 1127

Supplicating For Forgiveness And To Be Kept Safe and Sound.

It was narrated from ‘Aishah that she said:
“O Messenger of Allah, what do you think I should say in my supplication, if I come upon Laylatul-Qadr?”
He said: “Say: ‘Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul-‘afwa, fa’fu ‘anni (O Allah, You are Forgiving and love forgiveness, so forgive me).'”
Sunan Ibn Majah 3850

Rewards
It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet said:
“Whoever fasts during Ramadan” and according to the Hadith of Qutaibah, the Prophet said:
“Whoever spends the nights of Ramadan in prayer (Qiyam) out of faith and in the hope of reward, he will be forgiven his previous sins, and whoever spends the night of Lailat Al-Qadr in prayer out of faith and in the hope of reward, he will be forgiven his previous sins.”
Sunan an-Nasa’i 2202
So Laylat al-Qadr has this distinction, because it is prescribed for us during this night to strive hard in worship, du‘aa’ and dhikr, and to seek it

And Allah Alone knows and He is the source of all Power. May Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad.
