Surah Qadr verses 1-5
In Surah Dukhan verses 3-5
Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind].
On that night is made distinct every precise matter –
[Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger].
Qadar means that Allah has decreed everything that happens in the universe according to His prior knowledge and the dictates of His wisdom.
Belief in al-Qadar includes four things:
1 – The belief that Allaah knows all things, in general and in detail, from eternity to eternity, whether that has to do with His actions or the actions of His slaves.
2 – The belief that Allaah has written that in al-Lawh al-Mahfooz (the Book of Decrees).
Concerning these two matters Allah says in Surah al-Hajj 22:70
“Know you not that Allaah knows all that is in the heaven and on the earth? Verily, it is (all) in the Book (Al‑Lawh Al‑Mahfooz). Verily, that is easy for Allaah”
Abdullah b. ‘Amr b. al-‘As reported:
“No calamity befalls on the earth or in yourselves but it is inscribed in the Book of Decrees (Al Lawh Al Mahfooz) before We bring it into existence. Verily, that is easy for Allah”
“The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried” means,
What has been decreed has been written in al-Lawh al-Mahfooz (the Book of Decrees), and nothing else will be written after that is finished.
Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi, 7/186
The writing is of two types: one kind which cannot be altered or changed, which is what is in al-Lawh al-Mahfooz, and a type which may be altered or changed, which is in the hands of the angels. And the ultimate outcome is what is written in al-Lawh al-Mahfooz.
3 – The belief that whatever happens only happens by the will of Allaah – whether that has to do with His actions or the actions of created beings.
Allah says concerning His actions in Surah al-Qasas verse 68
“And your Lord creates whatsoever He wills and chooses”
4 – The belief that all things that happen are created by Allaah in their essence, their attributes and their movements.
Allah says in Surah al-Zumar verse 62
“Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is the Wakeel (Trustee, Disposer of affairs, Guardian) over all things”
If a person believes in all these things then he believes correctly in the divine will and decree (al-qadar).
With the start of the last ten days of Ramadan, the Prophet (ﷺ) used to tighten his waist belt (i.e. work hard) and used to pray all the night, and used to keep his family awake for the prayers.
Sahih al-Bukhari 2024
Narrated `Ali bin Abi Talib:
One night Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) came to me and Fatima, the daughter of the Prophet (ﷺ) and asked, “Won’t you pray (at night)?”
I said, “O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! Our souls are in the hands of Allah and if He wants us to get up He will make us get up.”
When I said that, he left us without saying anything and I heard that he was hitting his thigh and saying, “But man is more quarrelsome than anything.” (18.54)

Offering Salat (prayer) and invoking Allah in the last hours of the night (Tahajjud)
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) (p.b.u.h) said,
“Our Lord, the Blessed, the Superior, comes every night down on the nearest Heaven to us when the last third of the night remains, saying:
“Is there anyone to invoke Me, so that I may respond to invocation?
Is there anyone to ask Me, so that I may grant him his request?
Is there anyone seeking My forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?”
Sahih al-Bukhari 1145
Surah Al Isra
Establish prayer at the decline of the sun [from its meridian] until the darkness of the night and [also] the Qur’an of dawn. Indeed, the recitation of dawn is ever witnessed.
And from [part of] the night, pray with it as additional [worship] for you; it is expected that your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station.
And say, “My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority.”
He (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) will attain the station of praise and glory (maqaam Mahmoud) on the Day of Resurrection. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And in some parts of the night (also) offer the Salaah (prayer) with it (i.e. recite the Qur’aan in the prayer) as an additional prayer (Tahajjud optional prayer ____ Nawaafil) for you (O Muhammad). It may be that your Lord will raise you to Maqaam Mahmoud (a station of praise and glory, i.e., the honour of intercession on the Day of Resurrection)”
This refers to his intercession on the Day of Resurrection asking that judgement be passed among all of creation. That will happen after they have been gathered and stood for so long, and there befalls the people that which will befall them. The people will go to the Prophets and each one will excuse himself from interceding for them, until they come to our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). He will go to his Lord and fall prostrate before Him, and he will ask to intercede for the people and it will be granted to him. It is called al-maqaam al-mahmoud (a station of praise and glory) because all of creation will praise Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) for that status, because his intercession will be a cause of their suffering in the lengthy standing coming to an end. see here
Narrated Ibn `Umar:
On the Day of Resurrection the people will fall on their knees and every nation will follow their prophet and they will say, “O so-and-so! Intercede (for us with Allah), “till (the right) intercession is given to the Prophet (Muhammad) and that will be the day when Allah will raise him into a station of praise and glory (i.e. Al-Maqam -al-Mahmud).
Sahih Al Bukhari
Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-‘As:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: If anyone prays at night reciting regularly ten verses, he will not be recorded among the negligent; if anyone prays at night and recites a hundred verses, he will be recorded among those who are obedient to Allah; and if anyone prays at night reciting one thousand verses, he will be recorded among the muqantireen (those who receive huge rewards.)
Sunan Abi Dawud 1398
The muqantireen are those who will be given a qintaar of reward. A qintaar is a large amount of gold, and most of the scholars of Arabic language are of the view that it is four thousand dinars.
And it was said that a qintaar is a bull’s hide full of gold, or eighty thousand, or a large but unspecified amount of wealth.
See al-Nihaayah fi Ghareeb il-Hadeeth by Ibn al-Atheer.
What is meant by this hadith is to emphasize the greatness of the reward earned by the one who recites a thousand verses.
“A qintaar is better than this world and everything in it.”
Whoever prays qiyaam reciting from Soorat Tabaarak to the end of Qur’aan has prayed qiyaam with one thousand verses.
And Allah is the source of power of all times & strength.
